shu-kou-red-hares-fur-jianzhan-tea-bowl
"Shu Kou" Red Hare's Fur Jianzhan Tea Bowl

"Red Hare's Fur" (红毫, Hong Mao) is a warm-toned branch of the classic Jianyang hare's-fur family. The base glaze fires to a deep red-orange, and the iron in the glaze crystallizes into fine dark-brown-to-black streaks that run outward from the center of the bowl like soft fur along an animal's back. On the finest pieces — and this is one of them — the contrast between the bright warm ground and the dark streaks is unusually clean and crisp.

Here the interior sits a glowing red-orange, deepening to a near-black core at the center, with the dark hare's-fur streaks streaming outward in even rays to a bright orange-gold rim. The exterior continues the same pattern in deeper, more saturated tones, the streaks denser and the red ground more bruised and earthy as the bowl moves into shadow.

Handcrafted in Jianyang, Nanping, Fujian — historically known as Jianzhou or Jian'an — and fired at 1300°C. The bowl is dense in hand and holds heat well; its iron-rich glaze is often said to soften the taste of the tea.

Capacity

115 ml

Weight

185 g

Height

5.5 cm

Diameter

8.0 cm

Handmade — slight variations in size and weight are normal.

Held in hand for size reference — see photo above.

Photos are taken of one piece selected at random from each batch.
