The Story Behind This Tea
Deep within Yunnan's Da Xue Shan (Big Snowy Mountain) and Wuliang Mountain ranges, ancient tea trees grow in conditions that most cultivated gardens cannot match. Mengku Snow Mountain sits at the junction of Lincang City and Shuangjiang County and Gengma County in western Yunnan. Mengku No.1 Tea Tree and tea groups situated at the Yuku town on the peak of Mengku Snow Mountain (2200-2750 meters above sea level), where the average annual temperature is lower than 11°C and annual rainfall is about 2000 mm. These trees, growing wild or semi-wild in primordial forests, have developed deep root systems over centuries, drawing minerals from ancient soils untouched by modern agriculture.
The leaves harvested for this tea come from such trees—specimens that have survived without human intervention, developing a character that Chinese tea masters call "Ye Wei" (野味)—the taste of wilderness. The 'old tree' in the name refers to the wild ancient trees left to grow in natural forests, semi-cultivated old trees in wild areas, or artificially-cultivated trees that have been maintained for at least a century. Pu-erh tea made from old tree leaves is generally higher in quality than younger teas.
