  • This rare 105 cultivar Wuyi rock oolong delivers an intoxicating wave of gardenia and osmanthus that captures your senses from the very first breath — no expertise required.

    What Makes It Unique

    1. Instant Aromatic Impact — The 105's bold, "sky-piercing" fragrance hits you immediately; no connoisseur experience needed to be captivated.
    2. Heritage Hybrid Excellence — Born from Huang Jin Gui (Golden Osmanthus) and Tie Guan Yin, this cultivar was selected from thousands of test plants over 20+ years.
    3. Aroma-Body Integration via Charcoal Mastery — Medium-heavy traditional charcoal roasting (Tàn Bèi 炭焙) fuses explosive florals with deep minerality and lasting mouthfeel.
    4. The "Secret Weapon" of Premium Da Hong Pao — Many celebrated Da Hong Pao blends owe their signature fragrance to the 105 cultivar, making this single-origin version a rare opportunity.
    5. Tea Master's Ultimate Test — 105's rapid fermentation demands split-second precision; clean, elegant aroma without muddiness proves exceptional craftsmanship.

    The Story Behind This Tea

Huang Guan Yin, also called "105" by tea makers, is a Wuyi oolong cultivar fathered by famed Tie Guan Yin plants and mothered by Huang Dan plants. This is not merely a botanical fact — it is the foundation of one of Wuyi's most dramatically aromatic teas. Huang Guanyin "105" tea is a relatively small minority when it comes to rock teas, possessing traits of both "Iron Goddess" Tie Guan Yin as well as the aroma of Golden Osmanthus oolong, giving it a very rich and long-lasting fragrance.

The story of 105 begins in the late 1970s at the Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences Tea Research Institute. Huang Guanyin was bred by the Tea Research Institute from 1977 to 1997. From thousands of hybrid seedlings, specimen number 105 emerged with exceptional aromatic intensity, cold-resistance, and yield. When it was officially approved in 1998, it received the poetic name "Huang Guan Yin" (Yellow Goddess of Mercy), combining characters from both parent cultivars. Yet tea farmers in Wuyi still affectionately call it "105" — a code name that speaks to its precision and power, like a secret agent of fragrance.

What makes this particular 105 remarkable is the craftsmanship behind it. While many producers use light roasting to preserve the cultivar's natural high-note florals, our tea master applied a traditional medium-heavy charcoal roast (Zhōng Zú Huǒ 中足火), executed over extended sessions using the time-honored Tan Bei (炭焙) method. Charcoal-roasted oolong tends to have a richer, fuller body and a deeper complexity. The aromas from the charcoal and the tea itself meld together beautifully in the liquor, creating a delicate balance. The fragrance also lingers much longer in the cup and in the mouth. This approach transforms 105 from a "fragrance-only" tea into one with true Yan Yun (岩韵) — that signature rock minerality and structural depth that defines authentic Wuyi terroir.

Located in the north of Fujian Province, China, the Wuyi area is famous for its unique geography — the Danxia Landform. This undulating and sometimes spiky landscape makes for phenomenal scenery but what's more, it also creates an incredible environment for tea growing. Wuyishan Mountain boasts a unique Danxia landform and is considered the most complete and typical among over 260 Danxia landforms in China, earning it the reputation of "green waters and red mountains." The ancient red sandstone cliffs, mineral-rich soils, and mist-shrouded ravines impart a geological signature that no other tea region can replicate. Nestled in and around the cliffs of a nature preserve, rock oolong tea plants enjoy a very unique terroir consisting of mineral-rich soil, limestone cliffs, bamboo forests, and many rivers.
