8542 is a recipe developed by Menghai Tea Factory in 1985, ten years after the creation of the renowned 7542. Where 7542 set the benchmark for raw puerh with its classic floral and fruity aroma, 8542 pursued a different direction — same overall grade 4 material, but with more buds and thicker leaves, yielding a stronger, more robust character. The recipe earned the Quality Award at the 2005 China International Tea Expo and has since been released in eleven batches (501, 502, 601–604, 701–702, 801, 1301, and 1901), becoming one of Menghai Tea Factory's enduring classics alongside its older sibling.
Batch 1901 was produced in 2019 and has been stored in our Xi'an dry storage since dispatch from the factory, under natural storage conditions. Over the years in dry storage, the tea has continued its steady transformation — the initial sharpness settling into a more composed, rounded profile while retaining the distinctive vibrancy that 8542 is known for.
The liquor pours a clear, bright yellow. Aroma is pure and elevated — honey sweetness (蜜甜香) woven with a gentle smokiness (轻烟香), layered with faint floral notes in the middle infusions. The taste is full-bodied and sweet-driven: a mild bitterness and astringency appear briefly but resolve quickly, giving way to persistent sweetness (回甘) and lingering mouth-coating sensation (生津绵长). Later infusions soften into a clean, sweet finish with a long aftertaste. This is a tea that rewards patience — drinkable now with clarity and structure, and with promising potential for further aging.
