Descrição

Raw pu-erh from Xigui, one of Yunnan's most prized single-origin tea areas — a place that breaks most of the rules about what makes a great tea garden. Made from 2020 harvest material, aged before pressing and release. Orchid fragrance, honey sweetness, a full and lingering finish. Compressed into 8g coin cakes, packaged in small boxes of five. Available as a single box (40g) or a full gift set of eight boxes (320g).

Xigui: The Exception That Proves the Rule

The conventional wisdom about great Yunnan tea is that altitude matters — the higher the garden, the slower the growth, the more concentrated the flavor. Most of the celebrated pu-erh origins sit between 1,500 and 2,000 meters above sea level.

Xigui sits at roughly 750 to 900 meters. By that measure, it shouldn't be one of the most sought-after origins in Lincang. And yet it is.

The reason is geography. Xigui village lies on the western bank of the Lancang River — the upper Mekong — in a deep river valley in Bangdong Township, Lincang. The valley walls are steep and the river runs fast. What this creates is a microclimate that functions differently from high-altitude tea gardens:

River mist and diffused light. The Lancang generates moisture that rises through the valley each morning, surrounding the tea trees in low cloud and softening direct sunlight. This slows the leaf's development in a way that mimics, and in some ways surpasses, the effect of high-altitude cold.

Warmth and minerals. The valley floor stays warm year-round. The ancient tea tree roots reach deep into mineral-rich riverbank soil — alluvial deposits shaped by centuries of water movement. This mineral complexity comes through in the cup in ways that high-altitude gardens on weathered hillsides often don't match.

Ancient trees, deep roots. The tea gardens at Xigui are old. The trees have had generations to establish root systems that access water and minerals far below the surface. The material they produce is dense with what the Chinese tea world calls neihan ( 内含) — internal substance, the quality that makes a tea feel full rather than empty in the mouth.

The result is a tea that is immediately recognizable to anyone who has tasted it: a strong orchid fragrance, honey sweetness from front to finish, and a throat sensation — a cooling, opening quality at the back of the palate — that is specific to Xigui and difficult to find elsewhere. Among Lincang teas, Xigui is often called the Banzhang of Lincang: a tea with a forceful, distinctive character that announces itself clearly.

The Material and the Aging

The raw material for this tea was harvested in 2020 from high-grade Xigui gardens — one bud plus two leaves, hand-selected from ancient tea trees in the valley. After primary processing, the material was held in dry storage at Mengku Rongshi's Yunnan facility, aging naturally in a controlled environment until it was pressed and released in 2023.

A deliberate aging period before release has softened the sharp, assertive character of young raw pu-erh — the high tannins, the initial astringency. The orchid fragrance and honey character that define Xigui are now more integrated and easier to access. The tea is genuinely ready to drink, not a project requiring further patience.

Unlike some aged pu-erh where aging blurs the origin character, time in dry storage has clarified the Xigui profile rather than obscuring it.

What It Tastes Like

Aroma: Orchid fragrance is the defining note — floral, clean, and distinctly sweet. It's present in the dry coin, in the rinse, and in the cup throughout the session. Beneath it, a honeyed sweetness that deepens as steepings progress.

Soup: Pale gold to light amber, clear and bright. The texture is full and cohesive — more body than you might expect from a raw pu-erh at this stage of aging.

Taste: Honey sweetness from the first sip. The front palate is soft; there's no sharp bitterness leading in. Mild astringency is present — it belongs there — but it resolves fast, converting into sweetness within seconds.

Throat finish: The defining quality of Xigui in the cup. A cooling, opening sensation at the back of the throat — not the sharp cooling of mint, but something gentler and more sustained. It's accompanied by strong, active salivation that continues for several minutes after each sip.

Durability: Multiple steepings. The orchid fragrance is most pronounced in the first three; the honey character becomes more prominent as the session deepens. Later steepings are quieter but still sweet and smooth.

Bitterness: Noticeable but not dominant. It appears briefly and transforms quickly — the speed of this conversion is part of what makes Xigui material distinctive.

The Coin Format

Each coin weighs 8g, scored with a cross into four 2g quarters. One coin is the right amount for a standard 100–120ml gaiwan session — break into quarters if you want to brew lighter. No prying apart a full compressed cake, no loose tea to measure. Simple and clean.

The five-coin box is a complete, self-contained package: easy to give, easy to store, easy to carry.

Brewing Guide

Vessel
A porcelain gaiwan is the best choice for Xigui raw pu-erh — neutral, shows the soup color clearly, and lets the orchid fragrance come through without interference. Glass works well too. If using Yixing, use a pot that hasn't been conditioned with ripe pu-erh.

Water
Filtered or spring water. 90–95°C (194–203°F). Slightly below full boil keeps the floral notes bright in the early steepings.

Ratio
One coin (8g) per 100–120ml. Break into quarters to adjust down.

Rinse
One quick rinse, 5 seconds. Discard. This opens the leaves and wakes the fragrance.

Steeping Times (Gongfu)

Steepings Time
1–3 10–15 seconds
4–6 20–30 seconds
7 onward Extend gradually

Let the soup cool ten seconds in the cup before drinking — the cooling throat finish and salivation are most noticeable at drinking temperature, not scalding hot.

Casual brewing
One coin in a 350ml teapot or large mug, water at 90–95°C, steep 2 minutes. Strain and drink.

Storage After Purchase

  • Cool, dry, away from strong odors
  • Original small-box packaging is adequate for short-term use
  • For longer storage, keep boxes in a clean cardboard box or unglazed ceramic jar, away from direct light
  • No airtight sealing — some air exchange supports continued aging
  • This tea is ready to drink now and will continue to develop slowly with time
