This oolong starts with a bug bite — and that's exactly the point. Yunnan Golden Empress is a rare insect-processed oolong from Pu'er, Yunnan, delivering deep honey sweetness, ripe stone fruit, and a smooth finish that needs nothing added. No flavorings. No blending. Just what happens when you leave a tea plant to do something extraordinary.
It Starts With an Insect
Most farmers treat leafhopper insects as a pest. Here, they're the whole point.
When the tea leafhopper (Empoasca onukii) bites into a young tea leaf, the plant triggers a biochemical defense response — releasing a cascade of natural aromatic compounds it wouldn't otherwise produce. The result is a honey-sweet, fruity complexity that no processing technique can fake.
This is why every garden that produces Golden Empress Oolong must be grown without pesticides. Not as a marketing claim — as a simple biological necessity. No chemicals, no leafhoppers. No leafhoppers, no Golden Empress.
What Makes Yunnan Different
Oriental Beauty oolong originated in Taiwan and is traditionally made from small-leaf cultivars. This Yunnan version is crafted from a Fujian small-leaf cultivar transplanted to Yunnan's Pu'er region — the same cultivar family used in traditional Oriental Beauty, but grown in Yunnan's high-altitude terroir. The result is a noticeably fuller body and a deeper, more robust honey character in the cup.
Same cultivar family. Different soil, different altitude, different climate. A distinctly different result worth trying on its own terms.
The Craft
-
Hand-plucked, one bud and two leaves at a time, during the peak summer leafhopper season
-
60–80% oxidation — significantly higher than most oolongs, placing it close to black tea in depth while retaining oolong's aromatic lift
- No artificial flavoring, no blending, no additives
-
Small-batch processed to maintain quality control at every step
