Twenty years of immaculate Xi'an dry storage have transformed this 2005 Lincang large-leaf spring harvest into a rare, clean-aged Sheng Pu-erh cake that no amount of money — and certainly no shortcut — can replicate.
There are aged teas, and then there are teas that were aged correctly. This 2005 Lincang Sheng Pu-erh is one of the latter: twenty years of dry storage, zero compromise, and a flavor profile that proves patience is the most powerful ingredient in any cellar.
What Makes It Unique
- Twenty years of verifiable dry storage — clean, pure, and uncompromised. No mustiness, no off-notes. Just the honest evolution of a well-sourced Sheng Pu-erh, exactly as nature intended.
- 2005 spring-harvest large-leaf arbor material — the gold standard for aging. One-bud-two-leaf (一芽二叶) spring flush from Lincang's mountain groves: the raw ingredient quality that makes a 20-year-old tea worth drinking.
- Hand-pressed stone-mold cake in 2025 — a one-time commemorative release. Loose mao cha that spent two decades quietly maturing in storage was pressed for the first time specifically for this anniversary edition. Once it is gone, it cannot be reproduced.
- Xi'an dry-warehouse provenance — a traceable, trusted storage pedigree. Dry storage (干仓, Gān Cāng) in Xi'an's low-humidity continental climate is among the most respected aging conditions in the Chinese aged-tea community. This cake carries that credential fully.
- Sourced from a factory whose philosophy matches our own. Mengpu Qinxiang Tea Factory has maintained consistent dry-storage practices since its founding in 2000. This is not a collaboration of convenience; it is a shared commitment to doing aged tea the right way.
The Story Behind This Tea
In the spring of 2005, high in the mountains of Lincang Prefecture, Yunnan, experienced tea farmers hand-plucked one-bud-two-leaf shoots from large-leaf arbor trees (大叶种乔木, Dà Yè Zhǒng Qiáo Mù). Lincang sits between 23°05' and 25°03' north latitude, 98°40' to 100°32' east longitude, at elevations commonly exceeding 1,400 meters, with many garden plots reaching 1,800 to 2,400 meters above sea level. The climate is mild, the air is clean, and the large-leaf cultivar grown here has a reputation for producing raw pu-erh that ages with particular depth and structure.
That spring harvest was processed using traditional Sheng Pu-erh methods — sun-withered, wok-fired (杀青, Shā Qīng) to halt oxidation, then sun-dried into loose mao cha (毛茶, Máo Chá). It was then transferred to a dry warehouse in Xi'an, a city in northwest China whose dry, low-humidity continental climate is well-regarded in the aged-tea world as a natural preserver of clean flavor.
For twenty years, the tea sat there. No interventions. No humidity manipulation. No artificial acceleration. Just time, and the slow, steady transformation that only a correctly stored Sheng Pu-erh can undergo.
The Mengpu Qinxiang Tea Factory (勐普秦香茶厂) was founded in Lincang in the year 2000. Twenty-five years later, in 2025, they marked their anniversary in a way that reflects their values: they retrieved this twenty-year-old loose mao cha, had it hand-pressed into 357-gram cakes using a traditional stone mold (石模压制, Shí Mó Yā Zhì), and released it as a limited commemorative edition. They also pressed a sister product — a 25th Anniversary Shou (Ripe) Pu-erh cake — at the same time, available separately.
The result is a tea that is already deeply enjoyable today. The long dry-storage period has softened the aggressive tannins typical of young Sheng Pu-erh while preserving the brightness, clarity, and complexity that wet-stored or heavily humid-aged teas often lose. If you enjoy wines with real cellar age — something that still has structure and life but has shed its harsh edges — this is that, in a cup of tea.
It is also a tea that continues to evolve. If you choose to store it well, it has years of development still ahead of it. But you do not need to wait. It is, right now, one of the most rewarding aged Sheng Pu-erh cakes in this price tier.
