説明

Ripe pu-erh from the Bingdao growing area in Yunnan — one of the most regarded tea regions in China — fermented using Mengku Rongshi's box fermentation method and aged before release. No waiting required. The tea is ready to drink now, packaged in individual tins of five 8g coin cakes. Each coin is scored with a cross so it breaks cleanly into four pieces — a practical feature for adjusting your brew weight. Available as a single tin (40g) or a full box of eight tins (320g).

Bingdao

Bingdao is a tea-growing area in Shuangjiang County, Lincang, Yunnan — the same county where Mengku Rongshi has been based since the family began making tea in 1935. It is one of the most sought-after origins in Chinese pu-erh, known for material with a distinctive character: clean, sweet, with a cooling finish and strong salivation that lingers after the cup is empty. These qualities are not common in ripe pu-erh, where fermentation often softens or masks the character of the raw material. Getting them to carry through into a finished shou pu-erh requires both good material and careful process.

The Process

Mengku Rongshi ferments this tea using their box fermentation method — a controlled approach in which the tea is managed in enclosed fermentation units rather than open large-pile wodui. Temperature, humidity, and timing are monitored and adjusted throughout. The result is a cleaner, more precise fermentation with less of the off-notes that conventional large-pile processing can introduce.

This method is part of the Mengku Rongshi tea-making tradition, which has been recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage — the highest level of craft designation in China.

Aged, Ready Now

The tea was fermented and then aged under controlled dry storage conditions before this 2026 release. That aging period matters: the initial roughness of a newly fermented ripe pu-erh has fully settled. The soup is smooth from the first steep. There is nothing to wait for.

If you've bought aged pu-erh before and had to wonder whether it was ready, this one answers that question clearly. It is.

What It Tastes Like

Dry cake: Reddish-brown, even in color, with visible bud tips. Well-compressed and clean.

Aroma: Sugar and caramel lead, with a background of fruit and dry wood. The cup aroma carries a clean, candied sweetness.

Soup: Deep red, clear, and bright. The texture is smooth — silky is the word that comes up most often. Not thin, not heavy; just even and continuous.

Taste: Sweet and smooth, with a distinct sugar-and-caramel quality throughout. The Bingdao character comes through in the finish: a light cooling sensation on the tongue, strong salivation, and a clean rock-sugar sweetness at the back of the throat that stays for several minutes. These are the qualities that make Bingdao material distinctive, and they've survived fermentation and aging intact.

Durability: Multiple steepings. The profile stays consistent — the sweetness and cooling finish carry through to the later steepings.

The Coin Format

Each cake weighs 8g and is scored with a cross, dividing it cleanly into four 2g quarters. This is a practical design choice. Gongfu brewing typically calls for 5–7g per 100ml, so one coin is roughly right for a standard gaiwan session — but if you want to adjust up or down, you can break the coin rather than trying to pry apart a compressed cake.

The format also makes this tea easy to share, travel with, or give.

Packaging

Each tin holds five coins (40g). The tins are designed to be kept — they're a reasonable storage vessel after you've opened them. A full box contains eight tins (320g total) in presentation packaging, which makes it a straightforward gift for someone who appreciates good tea.

Format Contents
Single Tin 5 × 8g coins (40g total)
Full Box 8 tins × 5 coins (320g total)

Produced in compliance with Chinese national food safety standards (GB standard).

Brewing Guide

No awakening needed
Unlike a compressed cake that's been stored for years, these coins are ready to use immediately. Break along the scored lines to your preferred weight.

Vessel
A porcelain gaiwan is the natural choice here — it shows off the soup color well and doesn't interfere with the clean, sweet character of the tea. A small Yixing pot works too.

Water
Filtered or spring water. Full boil — 95–100°C (203–212°F).

Ratio
One full coin (8g) per 100–120ml is a good starting point. Break into quarters to adjust down if preferred.

Rinse
One quick rinse, 5 seconds. Discard.

Steeping Times (Gongfu)

Steepings Time
1–3 10–15 seconds
4–6 20–30 seconds
7 onward Extend as needed

The cooling sensation and rock-sugar finish are most noticeable when the soup is warm but not scalding — let it cool for ten seconds in the cup before drinking.

Casual brewing
If you're not brewing gongfu-style: one coin in a 350ml teapot or large mug, full boil water, steep 2–3 minutes. Works well.

Storage

The tins keep the coins clean and protected. Once opened:

  • Keep the tin lidded when not in use
  • Store away from strong odors
  • No special humidity or temperature requirements — a kitchen shelf is fine for short-term use
  • For longer storage, keep in a cool, dry place away from direct light

This tea does not need further aging. It is at a good drinking stage now and will remain so for years with basic care.
