Beschreibung

2013 Sun-Dried Shou Mei — Fuding Guanyang · 300g Cake

This is a 2013 spring Shou Mei from Xitou village, Guanyang Town in Fuding. The material is Fuding Dahao cultivar, withered outdoors under direct sun. After four years of loose-leaf aging, it was pressed into this 300g cake in 2017.

It's worth being straightforward about the grade: this is coarse-end spring Shou Mei. The leaves are large and well-developed, the stems are present, and it is not a fine or delicate raw material by any measure. That's not a problem at this age — it's actually part of why this tea works. The heavy leaf and stems carry more natural sugars than a finer grade would, and twelve-plus years of aging have had plenty of material to work with. What comes out the other side is a cup that's dense, sweet, and deeply satisfying in a way that a more refined starting point often isn't. The price reflects the grade honestly.

Twelve years in, this tea is well into mature territory — further along than anything else in our current range except the 2012 Gold Brick. The raw character of young white tea is completely gone. The liquor pours a clear, bright red — vivid and clean, not murky. The flavor has moved beyond simple date sweetness into something more layered: there's the dried date, and underneath it a ginseng-like depth that the Chinese call 参香, and a broader medicinal warmth that settles in after the sip. It's not subtle. It's the kind of cup that makes it immediately obvious you're drinking something that has had time.

Sun-dried processing was the right call for this grade and this aging trajectory. The additional oxidation from direct sun exposure gave the tea a richer, darker foundation to age from. Combined with the natural sugars in the coarser leaf, the result is a cup with genuine body and weight.

One practical note on brewing method: this is one of the few teas in our range where a slow steep — grandpa style or 焖泡 in a thermos — genuinely outperforms gongfu for many drinkers. The extended contact with boiling water draws out the sweetness and the deeper aromatic layers in a way that the quick steeps of gongfu don't always capture. That said, gongfu gives you more control and more rounds, so it depends on what you're after.

The tea meets Chinese national food safety standards (GB). There is no organic certification.

A Note on Weight

This cake was originally pressed to a 350g standard in 2017. The raw material — coarse, late-spring Shou Mei — wasn't easy to sell at the time, so it was set aside deliberately for long-term aging.

Over the years, aged tea cakes lose moisture and mass gradually as they continue to transform. By the time this tea reached the stage where it was genuinely worth drinking, the actual cake weight had settled to somewhere between 310g and 340g. We label it at 300g to make sure every cake you receive meets or exceeds what's on the wrapper — not as a conservative estimate, but as an honest one.

What you're getting is a cake that weighs more than labeled, made from material that needed time to become what it is now.

Brewing

Fully boiling water (100 °C) throughout. At this age and with this leaf structure, there's no reason to hold back on temperature — the heat is what opens the tea up.

Slow steep / 焖泡 (particularly recommended): About 3g in a thermos or lidded mug with boiling water. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes or longer before drinking. Refill with boiling water when the cup is about a third full. This method suits the tea well — the extended time in hot water draws out the sweetness and the deeper aromatic layers that faster methods can leave behind. It also makes for an effortless brew throughout the day.

Grandpa: Same as above, but in an open mug. Drink as it steeps, refill as needed. Less concentrated than a thermos steep, but equally low-effort.

Gongfu: Break off approximately 5g with a tea pick and brew in a gaiwan or small teapot (around 110ml). A quick rinse with boiling water before the first steep. First steep 20–30 seconds, extend by 10–15 seconds each round. Expect 12 or more rounds — the coarse leaf holds up exceptionally well across a long session.

On gongfu timing: this tea is not afraid of a long steep — don’t rush it. If the water isn’t hot enough, or the steep is too short, the liquor won’t reach that deep, rich red and will come out thin and flat.

Western / pot: Around 3–5g per 300–400ml, boiling water, 4–5 minutes. The dark, full-bodied liquor comes through clearly.

Available Sizes

  • 30g Sample — roughly six gongfu sessions. A practical way to try an aged tea before committing to a full cake.
  • Single Cake (300g) — the standard option. Store in a dry, odor-free space at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.
  • Tong — 7 Cakes (2.1kg) — the most economical option. At this age, the tea is stable — you're not buying it to age further, you're buying it to drink. A tong is a reasonable supply if this becomes part of your regular rotation.

On value: Aged white tea from a named origin, at a daily-drinker price, is not common. The grade is coarse and the description says so. But the aging is real, the flavor is there, and if you've been curious about what mature Fuding white tea actually tastes like without paying a premium for fine raw material, this is a direct answer to that question.

If you're comparing across the range: The closest product is the 2012 Gold Brick — same region, similar grade, one year older. The Gold Brick is pressed tighter and in a larger format (500g); this cake is 300g and somewhat easier to work through. The flavor profiles at this age are broadly similar — both are in mature territory with date and medicinal character — but the Gold Brick has had one additional year and a different compression history. Either works as an entry point into older Fuding white tea.
