The collection, in depth

Mid-Aged Sheng/Raw Pu-erh — Xi'an Dry Stored, Ready to Drink

Explore raw pu-erh selected for its present drinking character after time in storage. Compare material year, pressing and stated history, rather than expecting every tea of the same age to reach an identical stage.

The middle of a tea's life

The middle of a tea's life

A young raw pu-erh is aromatic and floral, and it fights back: bitterness and astringency, a thin body, a finish that dries the mouth. Leave it long enough and that all inverts — camphor, dried fruit, old wood, a liquor that coats rather than bites. What sits between those two states is what this collection is made of. The edge has gone. The sweetness and weight have arrived. The tea is not finished changing, but it no longer needs you to be patient with it.

That stretch is not a fixed age. It is a state, and how fast a cake reaches it depends less on the calendar than on where it was kept. Two cakes from the same pressing will not arrive together if one spent its years in humid air and the other in dry.

Natural dry storage is our chosen approach, without artificial humidity control. It is not a guarantee that every off-note or moisture problem is impossible; the condition and history of the actual tea matter.

What humidity adds, and what it takes away

Humidity influences storage development, but there is no fixed conversion from five humid years to fifteen dry years. Temperature, material, packaging and the particular environment also affect the result.

Dry storage — what these were kept in

Slower. Aroma stays high and distinct: florals, honey, fruit, rather than one flat dark note.

The cup stays clean. We prefer a clean aroma without damp notes dominating the cup. Natural dry storage is not a guarantee that moisture damage can never occur.

The tea tastes of its material and its origin. Storage does not get in the way.

Humid storage — the faster route

Faster. Colour darkens and body thickens years ahead of a dry-stored cake.

Storage aroma can reflect the tea’s environment. Persistent musty notes deserve investigation; a single description cannot establish a universal permanent outcome.

At its worst it tips into mould. What was meant to taste aged ends up tasting merely old.

Neither approach is a trick, and humid storage has produced teas people love. But it is a different result, not a shortcut to the same one — and it is not reversible. Everything here took the slower road in our Xi'an dry store, which is why the word that keeps coming up in tasting notes for these teas is clean.

Reading the press year

Read the year label carefully: the leaf’s harvest or material year can differ from its pressing date. An older material compressed recently has not spent all of those years as a cake.

Pressed Where it is now What is left
2019 and later Just into the window. Bitterness has receded, honey and florals have come forward, body is still building. The most room of anything here. These are the ones to buy if you want to keep tasting the change.
2013–2018 Mid-window. Sweet, thick, rounded — the point where most of these were chosen. Drinkable on any ordinary morning. Years of development still ahead, but nothing you have to wait for.
2005–2007 The mature end. Camphor, dried fruit, old wood, a long finish and a heavier mouthfeel. Less about further transformation, more about how long a well-stored cake holds its peak.

2021/2022 · Entering the window

Hidden Mountain Raw Pu-erh Cake

Ancient-tree material from an undisclosed source, pressed in a small run. Still carries explosive florals and a honeyed sweetness, with the raw power underneath already rounding off. The youngest tea here, and the clearest look at where the others started.

High-altitude Lincang arbor leaf, dry-stored into a silky, honey-sweet cup that sits between youthful lift and real depth. The most balanced tea in the collection — nothing sticks out, nothing is missing.

Fengqing Ancient Arbor Raw Pu-erh Cake

Hand-picked Fengqing spring material, pressed and then held dry long enough for the edges to soften into something deep and sweet. The most affordable way into mid-aged sheng, and the one we suggest starting the comparison with.

Xiangzhuqing Ancient Tree Golden Leaf Brick

Pressed from mature huangpian leaf out of 1,980-metre ancient gardens, which is why it is sweet and velvety with almost no bite. The answer for anyone who has decided raw pu-erh is simply too harsh, and a brick rather than a cake.

The Patient Years — Lincang Vintage Cake

Large-leaf Lincang spring harvest, held in immaculate dry storage since pressing. Camphor, dried fruit and a thick, quiet sweetness, with none of the dampness that makes some old cakes taste merely old. The oldest tea here.

The rest of the collection fills in the gaps between them — Kaiyuan Reserve, pressed once in a single run and never re-pressed; Mengku Rongshi Mu Shu, which runs across a whole run of vintages with the material description stated for each release; Taihua Ancient Tree and its waffle-cake form from Fengqing; Dazhai ancient tree and Qilin Tribute; the three-cultivar waffle cakes and TeaSoul coins for anyone who does not want to break a cake; and 300-year ancient tree, dragon pearls, Ancient Arbor Harmony and Three Legendary Leaves at the upper end.

Matching the tea to what you want

You want to drink it now, not wait Anything from 2013 to 2018. That band is the reason this collection exists — already sweet, already thick, nothing to apologise for.
You want to buy it and keep watching Start from 2019 or later. There is more transformation left in those, and dry-stored material changes slowly enough to be worth checking in on once a year.
You have found raw pu-erh too harsh Usually an age problem, not a tea problem — but if you want to skip the argument entirely, the Golden Leaf brick is made from mature leaf and barely bites at all.
You want to taste what dry storage does Buy two press years from this collection as samples and brew them side by side. The difference you are looking for is cleanliness, not strength.

Where this one fits

Raw pu-erh is the largest part of what we carry, so it is kept in four collections, each sorted by a different question. This one is sorted by how far along the tea already is. The other three sort by something else.

What to do with it once it arrives

With suitable storage, flavor may continue to develop. Try the tea periodically and keep it because you enjoy its direction, rather than assuming that more years will always improve it.
