This is a wood-fired stoneware gaiwan made in Dehua, Fujian — one of China's long-established ceramic-producing regions. It's fired at 1200°C with a kiln-change glaze (窑变釉), which means the surface colors and textures shift naturally during firing. No two pieces come out exactly the same.

The glaze leaves the surface slightly rough to the touch. Not smooth like porcelain. Some people like that, some don't — worth knowing before you buy.

A few practical things:

• The rim flares outward slightly, which makes it easier to handle without burning your fingers when pouring
• The walls are on the thicker side, so it feels solid and comfortable in the hand
• The tea tray sits underneath the gaiwan and catches any water that spills during brewing — keeps your table dry
