Your Complete Guide to Buying Fu Brick Tea
How to Choose the Right Fu Brick Tea
Not all Fu Brick Teas are the same — and that's what makes exploring them so rewarding. Here's what matters most when making your choice:
1. Look for Dense, Evenly Spread Golden Flowers
The Golden Flowers (Eurotium cristatum) are the single most important quality indicator in any Fuzhuan tea. Dense, uniformly distributed golden-yellow specks throughout the brick mean the fermentation was expertly controlled. Sparse or absent blooms suggest lower-grade production. The traditional rule still holds: the more Golden Flowers, the better the tea.
2. Know the Difference Between Producers
Fu Brick Tea is not a single, uniform product — the producer's philosophy shapes everything about the tea's character:
- On Taoism teas are built for aroma and sweetness. Using Yunnan and Fujian base materials, they produce a Fu Brick that is immediately approachable, floral, and richly fragrant — an excellent entry point for new drinkers and a favourite among experienced ones.
- YXT (Yongxingtai) teas are built for raw material quality. Using Special Grade and First Grade leaves from their own Qinling Mountain gardens, YXT challenges the assumption that Fu Brick must use coarse, low-grade leaves. These teas are clean, nuanced, and show what truly premium base material can produce.
- Master Jia Genshe teas are built for time and depth. Every brick spends a minimum of four years aging before it leaves the warehouse — a commitment almost unheard of in the industry. Made from Anhua, Hunan leaves, Genshe's teas are warm, smooth, and richly complex: the gold standard for aged Fuzhuan.
3. Fresh vs. Aged: Which Should You Buy?
- Fresh Fu Brick (1–3 years): vibrant jun hua aroma from the Golden Flowers, bright sweetness, lively and clean character.
- Aged Fu Brick (5–15+ years): smoother, deeper, and more complex — notes of aged wood, dark honey, dried jujube, and Chinese herbs develop over time.
